Dear School Community,
I am so pleased that my return to school. following extended leave, coincides with Public Education Week. This year's theme, "Ignite your Potential," provides us with an excellent opportunity to showcase how we inspire students to achieve their learning goals as well as a love for learning. At Killarney Heights Public School, we achieve this through our unwavering commitment to excellence in leading, teaching, and learning.
Leading with Vision: Our leadership team is dedicated to fostering a collaborative environment where quality teaching practices flourish. We set clear, ambitious goals to empower members of our school community to contribute to our vision of excellence.
Teaching that Inspires: Our dedicated educators employ a wide range of instructional methods to engage students and ignite their curiosity. Continuous professional development ensures that our educators remain highly effective in delivering explicit instruction leading to enhanced student engagement, a sense of competence and greater learning gains.
Learning that Empowers: We firmly believe that every student has the potential to excel. Our inclusive curriculum addresses diverse needs, offering enrichment programs for high-potential learners. We also prioritise social-emotional learning, fostering resilience and confidence in all our students.
As we celebrate Public Education Week 2025, let us take a moment to acknowledge the remarkable achievements of our students and staff. Together, we are igniting curiosity and ensuring our students are equipped to learn and grow.
I would also like to extend my sincere gratitude to Mrs. Davidson and the entire executive team for their exceptional leadership during my absence. Their dedication has been instrumental in driving improvements in key areas such as reading, spelling, numeracy, and attendance.
I am excited to share our strong 2025 NAPLAN results, which reflect the hard work and commitment of both our students and staff. We achieved outstanding outcomes in Writing for Year 3, Grammar and Punctuation for Year 5, and Spelling for both groups, with many KHPS students achieving levels classified as 'exceeding' the Similar Schools Group (SSG) benchmarks. This is a testament to the dedication of our teaching staff and the resilience of our students.
Furthermore, we have seen a reduction in the number of students classified as needing extra support compared to SSG schools in most tested learning areas, which is a positive indication of our effective delivery of learning support.
Thank you for your continued support of our school community. We look forward to seeing you at our Fathers' Day open afternoon and Springfest performances later this term.
Let us continue to inspire one another as we embrace the journey of education at Killarney Heights Public School!
Warm regards
Gillian Tegg

Rallye Lecture – French Reading Challenge
Kindy to Year 6 – Francophone stream students
The Rallye Lecture has officially kicked off! Students will be bringing their first book home early this week.
Thank you for supporting and encouraging your child in their reading at home. These books can be read together, to foster a joy of reading in French.
How it works:
- Each school day, students can borrow one French book from their teacher in exchange for returning the previous book.
- For each book read, students earn one coupon.
- Completing a challenge on the bookmark (Kindy–Year 2) or booklet (Years 3–6) earns another coupon.
- More coupons = more chances to win a prize in the final Rallye Lecture Ceremony at the end of term.
- Teachers will be tallying how many books each student reads—one top reader per year group will be awarded a Certificat d’Or and a book prize!
A fun collaboration!
This year, Camberwell Primary School (CPS) in Melbourne is running their own Rallye Lecture, inspired by ours! Both schools have chosen two class books per year level to read and discuss in class. Students will vote for their favourite and explain their choice. At the end of the challenge, we’ll exchange our presentations and compare results—will our favourites match?
Thank you for encouraging and supporting reading at home—it makes all the difference!
Happy Reading!

We’re excited to coordinate the Kindness Challenge at Killarney Heights Public School again this year – and we’d love for you and your children to be part of it!
What is the Kindness Challenge?
Over the course of 10 days, students will be encouraged to complete one act of kindness each day. These acts can be as simple as helping a friend, including someone at playtime, writing a kind note, or showing appreciation to a teacher or sibling.
When: Term 3, Weeks 4 & 5 (Monday 11 August - Friday 22 August)
Goal: To build a school culture where kindness is celebrated and practised every day.
How Parents Can Get Involved:
-
Talk to your child each day about their kindness act – what they did, how it felt, and how others responded.
-
Celebrate small wins and encourage reflection: “What’s one kind thing you noticed today?”
-
Join the challenge as a family! Kindness at home is just as powerful – whether it’s helping with chores, writing a note to a grandparent, or simply saying “thank you” with meaning.
Together, we can create a ripple effect of compassion across our school and wider community. Thank you for supporting this initiative and helping kindness grow – one small act at a time.

Manly Warringah Basketball Gala Day
Congratulations to all students who represented our school at the recent basketball gala day. All three teams displayed outstanding teamwork, resilience, and sportsmanship.
Our Girls team, made up entirely of new players, showed incredible growth and improved with every game. The Boys B team persevered without any subs and continued to build confidence and cohesion throughout the day.
The Boys A team delivered a strong performance, winning three out of four games. Although they tied for first place in their pool, they narrowly missed out on progressing to the finals due to points difference. The competition structure resulted in a very strong pool, but the team played with determination and represented the school with pride.
We now look forward to continuing our training in preparation for the upcoming Basketball NSW competition next term.

Last week 5 of our 8 leaders went on leadership camp and were accompanied by 175 other leaders from various leadership teams around the north shore. This taught us many different skills that we will use to help our school get even more amazing. Some of the skills we developed were communication, listening, fairness and resilience. We hope everyone else had as much fun as we did.
We did 6 different activities including Laser tag, rock climbing, archery, flying fox, abseiling and a leadership workshop where we got to meet a lot of new people and make groups to connect and get to know each other. All of these fun activities helped us to build our leadership qualities.
Overall it was a great experience and we learnt teamwork and leadership skills.

Last Monday the 28th of July and Tuesday the 9th, 5 of our leaders set off on a lifetime opportunity where we met other leaders from 25 different schools around Sydney. On camp we did various activities including, laser tag where we annihilated Miss Warden , flying fox, rock climbing, abseiling and a leadership workshop. Over the course of 2 days we interacted with students from other schools and learnt teamwork and leadership skills. Overall we had a great experience meeting fellow leaders from a wide range of different parts of Sydney and learning new leadership qualities that we can use later on in life situations.

As Plastic Free July comes to a close, we want to take a moment to thank all the students who have participated and made efforts to reduce plastic waste—your contributions have made a difference!
As the school holidays took up two weeks in July, we are pleased to announce that our school will continue this important initiative with Plastic Free August. This is a great opportunity for us to keep focusing on sustainable lunch box choices and further reduce our reliance on single-use plastics. Teachers will be rewarding students who actively participate with Voilas, Dojo points, and certificates to recognise their efforts.
Let’s keep up the good work and make a positive impact together! Thank you for your ongoing support!

Seeking Volunteers for the Gr8 Race Fundraiser- 5 December 2025
Motiv8sports make fundraising successful and stress-free by doing the heavy lifting for P&C’s and fundraising committees. We’re seeking a few parents and carers who are passionate to help organise some additional fundraising materials. If you have experience or connections with companies that create promotional fundraising products, we’d appreciate your assistance.
On the day of the event, parent volunteers will be required to help supervise and lead teams of students through the numerous Country Challenges. A sign-up link will be shared closer to the event date but make sure you keep your day flexible so you can attend and participate.
If you are interested, let us know in the KHPS P&C Volunteers Whatsapp Group here and we'll reach out! Thank you so much, we'd love your help!
Looking for our next VP of Events
As some of you may know, our amazing VP of Events, Lise Turcotte, will be finishing up at the end of this year. We can’t thank Lise enough for all the fun, creativity and hard work she’s poured into our school events, from student discos to World Music Day, and now the upcoming Gr8 Race.
With Lise moving on, we’re looking for someone to step into the role and keep the good vibes going. It’s a volunteer role that’s perfect for someone who likes to take initiative, make things happen, and enjoys working with a great bunch of people. The best part? Lise is still around till the end of the year, so it’s a great chance to tag along and learn the ropes.
If you love the idea of helping bring families and community together and making school events memorable, we’d love to hear from you! Please send an email to president@khps-pc.com.au we'd love to chat with you!

Thank you to the Corelli Strings students for their engaging performance at the Stage 3 Assembly on Friday conducted by Annabelle K. They opened with the lively Bushwhacker Stomp followed by a dynamic performance of The General’s Order. Their performance showed the hard work they have put in at weekly rehearsals since March.
These students also rehearsed these pieces at the Strings Workshop at Forestville PS in Term 1, the KHPS Strings Workshop in Term 2 and a 3-hour combined schools rehearsal at Meadowbank PS in Term 2.
The 12 students in Corelli Strings will be performing three pieces from memory at the Arts Unit Festival of Instrumental Music (FOIM) Concert at the Sydney Opera House on Monday 8 September. The students have put in a great effort to learn these pieces to such a high standard and we look forward to seeing them on stage later this term where they will join forces with 200 strings students on the Opera House stage.

French Market – Sunday 16 November 2025
The countdown is on! 103 Days to go!
Join the team for a day of fun and support the FANS bilingual program!
Mark your calendars for a special event that draws visitors from across Sydney and beyond.
The 19th edition of the FANS French Market will be held on Sunday 16 November on KHPS grounds. The French Market promises to be a fantastic day out for families, with plenty of highlights for children—featuring fresh French food stalls, carnival rides and games, fairy floss, and delicious treats like crepes and waffles.
Visitors can enjoy a unique shopping experience, with around 60 professional vendors selling fine foods, homeware, fashion, jewellery, accessories, lifestyle services and more.
To add to the French ambiance, don’t miss the main stage for delightful live music performances throughout the day.
What started out as a humble school fete is now in its 19th edition and has become a highlight of the market scene in New South Wales. If you have never experienced it, check this out.
Major FANS Fundraiser
This major fundraiser is vital for the sustainability of the FANS bilingual program. While program fees cover teacher salaries, this event funds essential operational costs, recruitment efforts, and new educational resources for our children.
Calling all parent volunteers
While planning has already been kicked off by a small core group, we are looking for people to supplement the team which will bring this incredible event to our community.
The French Market Committee, composed entirely of busy working school parents like you, plans and runs this event by volunteering their own time. The more people involved, the lighter the workload and the more enjoyable the experience for everyone.
To make this team successful, a variety of skills are needed in music, logistics, decorating, sales, gathering donations for the raffle, and more!
Whether you can assist with coordination efforts now or volunteer for a few hours at a stall on the day, every bit of support makes a difference to the team.
àJoin the French Market 2025 WhatsApp group to learn more, make new connections with other parents, and be part of something special!
FANS Family Fun Day – Apologies
While we were looking forward to a great event, unfortunately the Family Fun Day planned for Sat 23 August is being cancelled to focus efforts on the upcoming French Market.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused and look forward to working with the amazing French Market volunteer team!
