Celebrating the Arts at KHPS
In my time at KHPS, I have been continually impressed by the breadth and depth of talent in the arts showcased within our school. Such vibrant displays of creativity are only possible when our community and school work in partnership to nurture the talents of our students.
Over the past two weeks, we have enjoyed remarkable performances from both the performance band and the harp ensemble during our school assemblies. The band captivated us with some lively jazz numbers, demonstrating how audience etiquette can shift depending on the genre of music. It was delightful to witness Stage 3 gradually becoming more comfortable clapping and cheering along with the performance. Meanwhile, the harp ensemble at the K-2 assembly showcased their skills beautifully, combining harp playing with singing to create a truly enchanting sound.
I was particularly impressed by the high level of creativity exhibited by our teachers, who have taken the initiative to write dramatic sketches and choreograph dances. Last Wednesday evening, Mr. Williams and I had the pleasure of attending the performance of our drama group at the Lights Up Drama Festival at The Concourse Theatre, Chatswood. The talent will continue to shine this week, with our dance groups performing at the Glen St Theatre as part of the North Sydney Dance Festival. Additionally, the choir's performance on Sunday was nothing short of outstanding.
The recent music festival was a wonderful celebration of our community's commitment to developing talent. The variety on display was astonishing, featuring bands, choirs, solo acts, duets, ensembles, and family performances. When I asked the students what made the day special for them, they shared that watching their friends perform was a highlight. Many were amazed at how well their peers performed, especially given their young age. For those who did not perform, the joy of spending time with friends and enjoying delicious food was equally fulfiling. One Year 6 boy proudly mentioned how special the French food was to him, as he felt a connection to his heritage.
As we continue to celebrate and support the arts at KHPS, it is clear that our students’ talents are nurtured by the collaborative efforts of our school community. I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the parents of the P&C and FANS for their invaluable support in making these events possible. I look forward to witnessing even more extraordinary performances in the future!

SNPS Dance Festival – Night One
On Saturday, our Intermediate Contemporary Ensemble and Senior Dance Group lit up the Glen Street Theatre stage in their very first performance at the festival this year. Both groups danced brilliantly on stage. The dedication of regular rehearsals and private practice certainly paid off and we are exceptionally proud of the students again this year.

Onward to the next performance on Tuesday night, where both groups will perform in the same show at 8pm! We look forward to wowing the many parents and staff who will be in the audience and thank them for their support.

Kindergarten parents are cordially invited to our Seedling Market on Thursday 3rd July (and Friday 4th if there are leftover seedlings) at 3 pm in the Kindy Canyon. This is an opportunity to purchase a seedling grown by your child's class during our Saltwater Country Science unit.
The children have worked hard to understand the needs of plants and have responsibly tended to them over the course of the term. All seedlings will be priced at $2. Please note there will be a limited supply of seedlings. For sale will be beans, bok choy, cucumbers, spring onions and radishes. Please remember these were grown by Kindergarten students.
It may be a fun holiday project to continue growing the seedlings at home and harvesting the produce when ready. All proceeds from our market stall will go towards purchasing additional seeds and plants for the school garden. Looking forward to seeing many of you then.
Harp
The Intermediate Harp students had a busy week performing at the K-2 Assembly on Friday followed by a performance in the opening session at World Music Day on Sunday. They delighted the audience with four pieces played in beautiful harmony: Rainy Day Dreams, Kookaburra, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star and All Through the Night. Thank you Irene for bringing this wonderful ensemble to KHPS.
Irene would love to start a Beginner Harp group on a Thursday after school starting in Term 3. Please register your interest by writing to khpsband@gmail.com before the end of this term. We hope to introduce a new group of students to this lovely instrument at KHPS.
World Music Day
The Hall was filled with music on Sunday for the annual KHPS World Music Day. This year we were lucky to enjoy performances from our own KHPS Choir, Band and Strings Students as well as welcoming over 180 students from Forestville PS, Roseville PS, Mimosa PS, Killarney Heights High School and the Sydney North regional Concert Band.
Beginner Strings started the day with their Open String Symphony and First Finger Rock conducted by Suna F. These violin, viola and cello students put on an enjoyable performance in an ensemble of 25 students. Keep up the great work Beginner Strings!
La Chorale de Killarney sang J’entend le Moulin conducted by Miss Willow. Primary Proms were up next with Snowgum before they were joined by the Festival of Choral Music Choir for Second Star to the Right. Miss Willow is preparing the Primary Proms for their Town Hall Performance with the Arts Unit combined choir and the Festival of Choral Music Choir are preparing to sing at the Opera House. The Festival of Choral Music Choir finished the choir session with Arlington.
KHPS Training Band opened the morning Band Session with a powerful set conducted by Maddy S followed by the Roseville PS Senior Band. The KHPS Training Band students only began learning their instruments this year and showed just how far they have come after 2 terms of lessons and rehearsals.
The lunchtime Strings Session was opened by the KHPS Amadeus Strings playing Sword Dance, Chicken on a Fencepost, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star and French Folk Song conducted by Lu G. Corelli Strings were conducted by Rowena playing Bushwhacker Stomp and their first performance of Voyager followed by Pip and the Bach Strings playing the two Harry Potter Themes and Galop Infernal from Can-Can.
The Strings Session also included the KHHS Chamber Orchestra who performed Vivaldi’s Concerto for 2 Cellos and St Paul’s Suite conducted by Rowena M. It was a pleasure to see the younger strings students stay to watch the High School perform. The Inner West Orchestra conducted by Suna F played a delightful set including Carrying Mountain, Tirolese (Rossini) and the lively Braziliana to finish.
Special invitees this year were the 30 strong Hwa Sheng Chorus that performed a vibrant half hour set including violin solo and piano accompanist.
The Band session from 2 to 4 pm was kicked off by Gerald S and the Mimosa Training Band. Mimosa PS sent along over 80 of their band students to perform on World Music Day. They played a lively set packed with material from their Training, Intermediate and Senior Bands. Special thanks to Gerald and all the Mimosa parents for joining us and we look forward to sharing more music together at future events.
KHPS Intermediate, Senior and Jazz Bands followed with dynamic performances conducted by Derek B. Intermediates started the session with Heavy Metal and SCB finished with Dynamite! It was a treat to hear the KHPS Jazz Band play at school and well done to the soloists!
Sydney North Band Program closed out the day in the Hall with a 50-strong Concert Band conducted by Jennifer P. The Band Program is an Arts Unit initiative with opportunities for students in state schools to apply to extend their musical journey. We thank Jennifer and all the Sydney North Band families for joining us at KHPS for the day.
The World Music Day at KHPS is made possible with support from students, families, volunteers, P&C, FANS and the KHPS staff. Thanks to all the volunteers on the day and behind the scenes for helping to make this such an enjoyable community event.
