LEARNING
Poetry Recitation Competition
It’s time for the annual French Poetry Recitation Competition! This school-wide recitation competition encourages all students to learn a poem in French and to deliver it from memory in a confident and eloquent manner.
In class
During sessions with their LOTE (Language Other Than English) teacher, students will unpack the text through explicit lessons around comprehension, vocabulary and pronunciation. They will revise and practice their diction during reading groups and LOTE lessons with a Teacher of French.
Grading
Please find below the competition grading rubric. For Stages 2 and 3, one poem will be slightly trickier or longer and will be worth two extra points for those seeking an extension option.
At home
Poems are being sent home to allow students to revise and rehearse their delivery prior to the final presentation. The recitation will take place during News time in Week 5/6 (Kindy to Year 2) or during LOTE in Week 6 (Years 3 to 6). A winner will be selected to participate in the finals in Week 7.
Poem selection
This is a joint CPS & KHPS project, organised for the 8th consecutive year at KHPS and for the third year with Camberwell Primary School (CPS). All KHPS students have the opportunity to participate:
- Kindy to Year 2: Anglophone stream and Francophone stream students will learn one poem per stream
- Year 3 to Year 6: Students will choose one of two pre-selected poems, according to their stream. One poem will be slightly trickier or longer and will be worth two extra points for those students seeking an extension option.
English First students who wish to join the competition are welcome to do so and will learn the same poem as the Anglophone stream students.
The poem will come home in your child’s bag or homework booklet by the end of this week.
Poetry Illustration
Students are encouraged to illustrate their poem and submit their artwork to their French teacher by the end of Week 7. A winning illustration will be chosen for each year, and all illustrations will be displayed on the walls of the Hall for the end of Term 2!

World Music Day
Sunday 22 June, 10am - 4pm
This whole-school event is hosted and organised by KHPS, with the help of the P&C and FANS. This is the 4th edition of World Music Day at KHPS, featuring multiple stages to hear our school's bands, strings, and choirs perform.
To grow the event, the school will be welcoming other bands, strings and choirs from across the Northern Beaches and North Shore to create an even more musical day!
Bring your family and friends to enjoy a musical day, along with fresh food and fun games.
As this is a fundraising event for the P&C and FANS, there will be a need for parent volunteers to make the day a success. Please stay tuned for a sign-up sheet.
ASSOCIATION
Democracy Croissants
The FANS Committee greeted members of the community while providing fresh croissants and pains au chocolat to early bird voters over the weekend at the KHPS hall. The treats were much appreciated by the morning crowd and complemented the P&C sausage sizzle and bake sale held afterwards. Thank you to the volunteers who made this happen!
Best regards,

Harp
We are exploring the possibility of starting a Beginner Harp Ensemble open to all students from Year 1 onwards. This group will provide a supportive and fun environment for young musicians who are new to the harp. Rehearsals for the beginner group would be held on Thursdays from 3:10 to 3:55 pm.
If your child is curious about the harp and would like to give it a try then we would love to hear from you! Please send an email to khpsband@gmail.com for more information or to express your interest. Note the beginner harp group will require a minimum of five students to run. Please get in touch if you would like further information.
KHPS Strings Workshop
The KHPS Amadeus, Bach and Corelli Ensemble students came together yesterday afternoon for our annual Strings Workshop. Students worked hard across three sessions with their Ensemble conductors and had the opportunity to focus on technical aspects of the music in smaller tutorial sessions.
Amadeus Ensemble
The Amadeus Ensemble is the first level of String Ensemble offered at KHPS and is open to students once they have completed either a year of Beginner Strings or commenced private lessons on their instrument of choice. This year we have 25 students in the ensemble conducted by Ms Lu G. It was inspiring to see such young students apply themselves across the three sessions and they performed a lovely rendition of Frère Jacques and the lively Little Polka accompanied by Rosy J on piano. This was the first performance of the year for this young ensemble and they looked very professional on the Hall Stage especially after almost three hours of tutorials and rehearsals. Well done Ms Lu and the Amadeus Ensemble and best of luck for your performance at the Northern Beaches Instrumental Festival on Saturday 31 May at Pittwater High School!
Bach and Corelli Strings
The Bach and Corelli Ensembles worked in groups across three sessions to prepare for the Northern Beaches Instrumental Festival coming up on Saturday 31 May 2025. The Bach Ensemble have worked hard on pieces from a range of musical styles this year with their conductor Pip B. The workshop was a wonderful opportunity to work in more detail on one piece in particular for the World Music Day at KHPS on Sunday 22 June. The Bach Ensemble performed Harry’s Wondrous World for their families at the end of the workshop.
The Corelli strings are working hard to memorise three pieces to perform at the FOIM concert at the Opera House in September 2025. They worked on two of these pieces over three sessions yesterday afternoon and performed ‘Bushwhacker Stomp’ at the end of the workshop conducted by Suna F.
Thank you to the KHPS Strings conductors Pip, Lu, Cara and Suna for providing such wonderful tuition to our Strings students. A special thank you to Rosy for her time tutoring, accompanying the ensembles on piano and joining the students on viola. We are extremely lucky to have such a wonderful team of experienced teachers and musicians at KHPS. Thanks also to all the parent helpers for supporting our students and conductors on Sunday afternoon.
Student Voices:
It was fun, I like that we did a little concert at the end. Charline, Y3, violist.
We practised the Can Can which is a new piece. It’s really hard! We didn’t play it at the end of the workshop because it’s not ready for the parents yet. I was glad my dad could see me play Harry’s Wondrous World during the concert at the end! Chloe, Y4, violinist.
Term 2 Strings Events:
Northern Beaches Instrumental Festival (Strings) at Pittwater High School on Saturday 31 May 2025. All strings students from Beginners to Seniors are registered to perform. Stay tuned for session times!
World Music Day at KHPS on Sunday 22 June 2025! All Strings will be performing on the day including Harp.
